Off Stone Town · History + sandbank

Two Zanzibar classics, timed around the tide.

One stop has walls, history and giant tortoises.

The other may barely exist a few hours later.

Prison Island and Nakupenda are often combined because they offer two completely different sides of a boat day off Stone Town.

Prison Island

Changuu, widely known as Prison Island, sits offshore from Stone Town.

Most visitors come for the island's history and giant tortoises.

A guide makes the historical context more useful than simply walking around the site.

Nakupenda

Nakupenda is a tidal sandbank.

That means the shape and amount of visible sand depend on the tide.

It is not a permanent beach club.

That impermanence is part of the experience.

Trips commonly include swimming, time on the sandbank and, depending on package, food.

Arranged locally from Jambiani

There are hundreds of tours for sale in Zanzibar, and we don’t pretend to run them all. Haji lives here in Jambiani and helps arrange experiences locally, together with people he knows and trusted partners around the island. Morten helps you plan before you arrive.
